The Power of Hands-On Crafts for Preschoolers
As a mimi separated by miles from my preschool grandchildren, finding ways to stay connected and foster their development is paramount, which is why I created the monthly Mimi box. Through fun crafting experiences, I’ve discovered the power of hands-on activities in nurturing their cognitive abilities while strengthening our bond, even though many miles separate us.
The Significance of Hands-On Crafting
In our fast-paced digital world, preschoolers are often inundated with screens and technology. While these tools have their place, nothing quite compares to the tactile experience of hands-on crafting. When children engage in activities where they see and do, they’re not just creating art – they’re developing essential cognitive skills.
Replication and Creativity
One of the key aspects of our crafting adventures is the opportunity for preschoolers to replicate or create crafts based on a provided picture. This process not only encourages creativity but also enhances visual-spatial skills as they translate a two-dimensional image into a three-dimensional creation.
A Hands-On Adventure with the Bunny Peep Car
The latest Mimi Box was an edible hit!
With Twinkies as the body of a car, chocolate-covered pretzels as the steering wheel, and bunny peeps as the drivers, this whimsical creation sparked imagination while honing fine motor skills as little hands assembled each component. Here’s everything you need to recreate it for your own grandkids.

- Unwrap the Twinkies and place them on a plate or flat surface.
- Use a plastic knife to carefully cut out a small section from the top of each Twinkie to create a seat for the bunny peep.
- Twist apart the cookies.
- Secure the Oreo wheels in place using icing.
- Insert one chocolate-covered pretzel for the steering wheel.
- Use icing to secure the bunny peep in the seat like he’s driving.
Bonding Across Distances
Beyond the cognitive benefits, these crafting experiences serve as a vehicle for connection across geographic distances. As my grandchildren unwrap their crafting materials and embark on creative adventures, they carry a piece of my love and presence with them, fostering our bond despite the miles between us.
Meaningful Engagement and Development
Each craft is thoughtfully curated to provide both fun and meaningful engagement. From birdseed ornaments to twinkie cars, these activities offer opportunities for sensory exploration, problem-solving, and creative expression – all essential elements of early childhood development.
Empowering Independence and Confidence
As preschoolers delve into crafting, they’re not just creating art – they’re gaining a sense of independence and confidence in their abilities. With each completed project, they take pride in their accomplishments, fueling a sense of self-efficacy that extends beyond the crafting table.
Celebrating Milestones and Memories
As we journey through each crafting adventure, we’re not just creating crafts – we’re making memories. From the joyous laughter to the proud displays of finished creations, each moment shared is a celebration of our bond and the milestones of childhood.
I adore these boxes with magnetic closures. My daughter saves them and we exchange a full box for an empty box when we’re together. Add some fun colored paper shred for a fun kid squealing presentation.
